(1) Funds sought, and use of proceeds

I seek to raise $30,000, which will be devoted to the following purposes (in sequence):

(1) 501(c)3 Application: $4,000. To pay a Virginia law firm (est. $3,600) to prepare and file application with the Internal Revenue Service ($400) for recognition as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charity. (Note: I’ve already paid for and completed the process to become registered as a Virginia non-stock corporation, which is the first step towards applying for 501(c)3 status; approval here.)

(2) General & administrative: $1,000. Stationary and (initial) flyer printing, postage and various general expenses.

(3) Video simulation: $1,000. The purpose of this video will be to create a realistic simulation of what a dog endures when locked in a car, even with the windows partially down, and even in what feels like a “cool” day to a human. I discussed this approach with Dr. Ward, who shot this video of himself in an SUV (and who I interviewed here), and he concurred that what I propose would be a more accurate simulation. The specifics of my approach will be secret until the video is unveiled, but I promise it will be dramatic and, I believe, be viral-capable.

(4) Research $6,000: I will conduct research into the perceptions of, and insights on the heatstroke issue with a sampling of the various key interest groups who will be vital in helping to make significant, measurable progress towards solving it. This research will involve in-person and distance interviews with veterinarians, police chiefs and mall managers, and initial surveys of dog owners and the general public.

(5) Develop business plan: $18,000. I will process the research I conducted in (4) with the ideas I’ve generated over the past year, and allow my creativity and previous business writing experience* to develop a full-scale business plan. I anticipate this will take approximately three months to complete.

To facilitate transparency & accountability, I will provide copies of bank HeatKills.org’s bank statements to donors, upon request (via email, PDFs).


(2) Anticipated tax-deductibility of donations to this effort, once HeatKills.org obtains its 501(c)3 approval

The law firm that I intend to retain to prepare the IRS application and guide HeatKills.org through the process of obtaining its nonprofit approval, Skeen Law Firm, has provided me with the following notice to post on this page:

“HeatKills.Org, Inc. is seeking donations to support our educational and charitable activities and to help us fund our application with the Internal Revenue Service for recognition as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charity. HeatKills.Org, Inc. plans to apply with the Internal Revenue Service for recognition of our tax exemption. We anticipate, but cannot guarantee, that the IRS will approve our application. Once our application is approved, any contributions made to HeatKills.Org, Inc. (even contributions made before such approval is received) will be tax-deductible under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.”

My name is Jon Sutz. I created HeatKills.org in 2014. Learn more here.

I am a multi-media designer, writer and creative consultant, based in Charlottesville, VA (www.jonsutz.com). Since 1989, I’ve provided creative leadership on educational, advertising and corporate communications projects for clients throughout the U.S. and Southeast Asia, including Sharp Electronics, Intel, Entergy, the Ritz Carlton Hotel Company, the American Productivity & Quality Center, and many others.

My specialty is converting complex subject matter into analytical graphics and visualizations (also known as infographics). I have applied this skill particularly to help attorneys craft graphic courtroom presentations. I also have designed, written and directed the production of corporate documentary videos, computer animations, a new print magazine, and many other media products.

In regards to my applicability to perform on the most expensive tasks in this seed capital phase, regarding research, and writing the HeatKills.org business plan, here is some indication of my experience:
